What an OOP Vehicle Inspection Includes
An OOP inspection is a safety / mechanical fitness assessment completed by a certified journeyman technician licensed through Alberta Transportation’s Vehicle Inspection Program.
The inspection checks key vehicle systems and components, including:
- Fuel and exhaust systems
- Electrical systems, wiring, lights, and wipers/defrosters
- Engine controls, powertrain, and driveline
- Steering and suspension
- Braking system
- Tires and glass
To pass, the vehicle must meet OEM standards and wear tolerances.
Structural Integrity and Collision / Corrosion Checks
In addition to mechanical items, the inspection includes a general body review—looking for signs of major collision damage/repairs and examining for corrosion in body or frame members.

Important Deadlines After Your Inspection
If the vehicle fails the initial inspection, repairs generally must be completed within 10 days to avoid being charged for an additional full inspection; a re-check within that window is typically limited to verifying required repairs.
Inspection certificates are valid for 14 days, and the vehicle must be registered in Alberta before the certificate expires—or a full OOP inspection may be required again.
Which Vehicles Need an OOP Inspection?
Most vehicles coming from another province will require an OOP inspection prior to Alberta registration. Certain specialty vehicles (e.g., restored antique/classic, homebuilt, modified, street rods, or vehicles without proof of prior Alberta registration) may also need an OOP inspection the first time they’re registered.
